What to Wear When Meeting Your Boyfriend’s Parents for the First Time

With Easter weekend around the corner, you may be gearing up for a long weekend of egg hunts, too much food, and maybe even the milestone of meeting your boyfriend’s parents for the first time. Making a good first impression is key, and the way you present yourself can make or break it.

Here are some tips for how to make this a Good Friday vs. your Last Supper with the fam.

Scope it out.

Ask your significant other about the type of plans, environment, and atmosphere to make sure you’re prepared. Nothing’s worse than showing up at a fancy family dinner in boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt – no matter how cute they may be. Also be sensitive to any strong family values.

Follow the 3 “Cs”.

Conservative, classic, and classy. Not cheap, controversial, and cleavage-bearing. Timeless is always better than trendy since the chances of grandma appreciating the harem pants or wedge sneakers is pretty low.

Staying the night? Pack conservative pyjamas.

While you’re not likely to be seen in them, a midnight trip to the bathroom in a lacy nightie may go from risqué to risky if you run into anyone en route. You can’t go wrong with a matching t-shirt and pant set like these.

Go easy on the makeup, jewelry, and scents.

Many people are allergic to fragrance and smelling like a walking department store isn’t cute on anyone. When it doubt, it’s usually better to err on the side of simple when it comes to makeup and accessories.

Don’t forget the finishing touches.

Pressed, clean, and snag-free clothes, well-groomed hair, fresh breath, and tidy nails will keep you looking polished.

Wear something you love and feel comfortable in.

You want to look and feel like your best self, and the more comfortable you are, the more relaxed and at ease you’ll be.

Personalize your outfit.

Personalize it with something special to you, whether it be vintage jewelry from your grandmother, or a blouse in your favourite colour. This can be a great conversation starter and shows a more personal side.

Relax and smile.

Confidence and poise go a long way. If you’re nervous, fake it til you make it! This is an exciting step in your relationship so savour it.
