I have been using two wireless connections for the past few years. One is for my business purposes, and the other is for my personal use. Initially, I planned to buy the freedom mobile for personal use, but later, the plan changed and was used for my professional use. Some parts of Toronto do not have proper internet access, and my workspace has a better network than my home.
Initially, I was impressed with their affordable and interesting promotions, which led to this connection. As a Freedom Mobile user for more than two years, I will share with you my highs and lows detailing Freedom Mobile. Let’s see Is Freedom Mobile good for you.
What is Freedom Mobile?
Freedom mobile is a wireless telecommunication provider in Canada. It is considered as the fourth largest mobile connection in Canada. They also provide services like home internet connections and TV plans. It can be considered as one of the popular mobile connections in Canada.
Who Owns Freedom Mobile?
The founder of the Freedom Mobile is Wind Mobile. He founded it in 2008 and later it was acquired by the Shaw Communications in year 2016. The Freedom Mobile is a key player in the Canadian wireless market now.
Even some of my neighbors are using the same network. In the year of 2022, Shaw was acquired by the major telecommunications provider Rogers Communication. Later Videotron, a subsidiary of Quebecor acquired the Freedom Mobile from Shaw Communications and Rogers Communications. Now the current owner of Freedom Mobile is Videotron.
Getting Coverage or Not?
As part of my business and personal needs, I have to travel inside and outside Canada. Once, I traveled to western Canada, and I really struggled to get the proper 5G network connection. I was in a rush to add more listing images to my Etsy shop. So I traveled for 40 minutes to reach Calgary and did the work. In western Canada, the coverage is only limited to certain metropolitan cities like Calgary and Vancouver.
Many people are complaining that the coverage of mobile phones is not good. If you are searching for the 5G speed network and not located in an urban area or city, then you may select other mobile connections. If you just want the 4G network, then this will be the perfect one for you. It gives you very budget friendly plans and offers than others. Most preferably the freedom mobile has direct connection only at Ontario, B.C., and Alberta. Other places will get the signals via carriers.
Coverage Comparing with the Big Three
The top three mobile network providers in Canada are Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Freedom has the fourth position in coverage compared to these three. The freedFreedom used their channels as carriers. The physical and population coverage is very low in Freedom Mobile. The big three have around more than 19% coverage for each, and the freedom mobile only has .066%. I am using Bell for personal use, and it has 28.8% of physical coverage.
Is Koodo Better Than Freedom?
I checked most of the networks for finding the best. When it comes to Canada, Koodo offers better more consistent and strong coverage than the Freedom mobile. The reliability and speed makes Koodo better. But when it comes to the cheaper rate, I always prefer Freedom Mobile. It doesn’t give the speed like Koodo, but can give a decent network for use.
New Mobile Network Cities of Freedom
While researching for this blog, I found that Freedom Mobile is expanding its network coverage to include new zones in popular Canadian cities. Newly added areas include Cranbrook, Kelowna, Lethbridge, Nanaimo, Medicine Hat, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Vernon, Courtenay-Comox, Kamloops, Campbell River, and Penticton. Now I am confident to work in these cities and not have to struggle to promote my Etsy shop.
To confirm the accuracy of this information, I traveled to Medicine Hat to check the network connection myself, and I can confirm that it is indeed true. If you live in one of these newly-added areas or elsewhere with excellent Freedom Mobile coverage, you might want to consider switching, as their phone plans are generally more affordable than those of competitors.
Then What Makes Freedom Mobile Special?
The network may be slower but the rate is very cheaper. As we discussed above, it has lower speed and network coverage. Freedom Mobile is known for offering competitive and often lower rates compared to the Big Three.
The monthly plans of Freedom mobile are more affordable than all the three top network providers in Canada. We can compare the basic monthly plan of Bell and Freedom, the both connections I use. I have to charge Bell for $50-$60 per month with 5GB of data , unlimited Canada-wide talk and text. In the case of Freedom, it costs $30-$40 per month, with 2GB to 5GB of data and unlimited Canada-wide talk and text.
Mostly I prefer the 5G plan that only costs $40 for a month with 75 GB data, nationwide unlimited texts and calls .When it comes to Bell, I have to pay $55 for the same offer. Freedom also gives you unlimited data options and contract free plans for users.
Why is Freedom Mobile So Cheap?
I already told you that the very cheaper rate is making the freedom mobile more special than the big three. They are offering very affordable plans and many of people are attracted towards it. The major reason for giving the network with less rate is they only have few towers to maintain. This help them to lower the operational cost. They are also preferring budget friendly plans and only fewer high-end features.
What Network Does Freedom Mobile Use?
Even though the network specialties of Freedom Mobile is shared, you know what network does this Freedom Mobil use? They use their own network in major urban areas across Canada and use other network for the place they don’t have reach. For this, uses the networks of Rogers, Bell, and Telus to provide services. This will help to low the cost and can provide connections with less rate.
Freedom Mobile Coverage Map
The Freedom Mobile coverage map is mostly concentrated in urban centers than the rural areas. The urban centers like Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary have best network availability, including some 5G locations. Outside this urban areas, coverage will not get much faster or depends on the partnerships carriers. I found that the coverage in urban cities are reliable. But it is spotty in more rural areas. So people in the urban areas can surely choose Freedom Mobile over others.
Customer Service
I would like to share a very personal experience with the customer service of Freedom Mobile. Once I switched the plans, something happened, and I connected with customer support for my queries. To make a call is very difficult after so many beeps and pressing keys. When I was finally able to speak with him, he was very rude, and they did not explain clearly. I was just stressed and called again after two days; that time, they explained more clearly and in detail. I think all the customer service is not bad, but some of them are not good at their work.
If you are also facing customer service problems, contact them after waiting one or two days. You can also ask questions by their customer support page of Freedom mobile.
Is Freedom Mobile Good? – My Honest Review
The pros and cons of Freedom mobile connection will completely depend on your purpose and location. If you prefer a 5G network nationwide and can afford high plans, then it is better not to select this network. If you are living in the cities mentioned above, lucky you get the best network at a very cheap price. In other places that do not have a better connection, you will get the 4G plans that suit you. As a freedom mobile user, I personally like all the offers and plans it offers. It is working for me very well.
