In my two and more years of experience on Etsy, I can assure you that the images are very important on this platform. The image is the visual representation of the product that can attract or reject instantly. Identifying the drawbacks and knowing the photo size techniques and tips will help you boost your sales, just like mine.
The terms may seem unfamiliar, but the definition is simple. So believe me, you will understand. Now is the perfect time to read the blog and make your Etsy profile more attractive.
The Best Photos for the Best Sale
I was not aware of the importance of the best images in my Etsy shop at the beginning. I used to add low-quality photos and free sites to upload resolutions. My Etsy shop was very unappealing to check, and I researched more about the image uploading tips. I quickly realized that high-quality photos create a strong first impression, encouraging potential buyers to click on my listings. The images should be clear, well-lit images that showcase the details of the products and be attractive to the buyers. This will be very helpful to promote your Etsy shop.
The first thing I did was to capture professional photographs. In the initial stage, I hired a photographer to take a few photos. Now, I have learned to take photos of my products professionally by using manual mode on the camera and editing them. By using professional photos, I noticed an increase in trust and credibility, which led to more sales. For banners and cover pic, you can use several easy designing sites. You can also find prefect Canva templates on Etsy shop of mine. Attractive images also boosted engagement on social media, bringing more traffic to my shop. Finally, I found that Etsy’s algorithm favored my listings with high-quality images, improving my shop’s search ranking and visibility.
Etsy Photo Basics You Should Know
Before you upload the photos on etsy, you should know some basics about the images on it. Usually you have to upload images for your profile, shop icon, shop banner, item listing, thumbnail, order receipt banner and the list goes. For each image there are certain things that have to be noticed before uploading it.
Aspect Ratio
At first I had this jargon like aspect ratio, format and resolution. It took a while to understand. But you don’t have to worry; I will give you a very simple explanation only for the purpose of uploading the perfect images.
The aspect ratio is indicated in two numbers like x:y which show the proportion of the width and height of the image. You have to upload images with different aspect ratios on your Etsy shop. The details below will help you identify the aspect ratio for each photo.
- Listing Photos: The aspect ratio for listing photos is 5:4 (e.g., 2000×1600 pixels)
- Thumbnail Images: An aspect ratio of 1:1 (e.g., 1000×1000 pixels) is needed for the thumbnails.
- Cover Photos:4:3 aspect ratio (e.g., 1200 x 900 pixels) is commonly recommended for cover images.
- Shop Banner: Etsy recommends an aspect ratio of 3:1 (e.g., 1200×400 pixels) to fit the banner area on your shop’s main page.
Required File Format
The images can be in certain file formats, such as PNG, GIF, JPEG, etc. If you don’t know how to check it, just go to the name and details of the pic. You will see any of these letters just after the name of the image.
Etsy usually supports main formats like png and gif. But jpeg is the most preferred format. If you find that your image is not in these formats, you can change the format. There are several online sites to convert the file format.
Size of the File
This is one of the important things to notice. One of my friends started etsy and he uploaded the high size files for the listing images. Then I found that the images are not loading while searching the product. The file size above 1MB may not complete the uploading and if it happens, then it may feel very difficult to load. While creating the listing, the maximum file size you can go for is 20 MB. You can use several free image compressing tools to reduce the file size.
Tips for the Best Image Uploading
Brightness: You should make sure that the images are bright and attract buyers. From my experience, well-lit photos not only make your products look more appealing but also help to highlight details that might get lost in dim or shadowy images.
Background: To avoid the messy or uncluttered background, you can use a green screen or any clean white cloth us background. This will only highlight your product. Black cloth or changing green screen to black by editing will emphasize your product only.
Image Orientation: You should make sure that your images are correctly oriented as per your intended position. Otherwise you may see some images misaligned or rotated that may look less professional. .
Image Rotation: My Etsy shop is completely maintained by me, and you can see there is no one mistake. This is because I always double-check the images, and they should be presented how we like to view them. If any image is accidentally rotated, correct it before posting.
Showcase Different Angles: I used to add several angles to a single product. For example, you can check the dress that is sold on online platforms. The single product has 4 or 5 images to swipe and see. Each pic will show the front side view, back, neck, and pic of sleeves to know the product in detail. Include multiple images from various angles to give buyers a complete view of the product.
Use Contextual Photos: You can add images showing the product in use to help buyers observe the application and scale.
Listing Images on Etsy
Already mentioned the pixels and aspect ratio for the listing images on Etsy. I usually aim to upload up to 10 images per listing. Among this, at least 5 to give buyers a comprehensive view. From my experience, using a 5:4 aspect ratio and maintaining a consistent orientation, where you can prefer the landscape or square for all images keeps my shop looking professional. Remember to always use the same orientation for the images. The files format for images will be JPEG, GIF, or PNG files in sRGB color mode with a resolution of 72PPI. To ensure faster uploads and a smooth user experience, I keep the file size under 1 MB.
